How it works
The course is live. You join by video from home. Eight people share the hour. Two people are on our side of the call: the one teaching, and a helper who watches the chat so a stuck question does not wait until the end. New cohorts start on the first Tuesday of each month. Exact dates are confirmed by email.
When we hold a seat we send a joining note and book a 20-minute settling call. The call is optional, and most people take it. We look at your camera and microphone, bump the type size if the screen is cramped, and practise opening the link so that Tuesday does not start with a hunt through email. If you would rather come to Novena with the tablet in a bag, we can do the same checks at the office by appointment. Classes themselves stay online. The office is for setup and paperwork.
Settling call, before the first Tuesday.
Each weekly lesson, morning or evening group.
Every class has two people on the call: the one teaching and a helper watching the chat. The helper’s job is to catch “I cannot see the button” while the lesson is still on that button. They do not teach a second class in a side window. They type a short steer, or they ask the person teaching to pause. We added this after the first cohorts, when questions stacked up and the last ten minutes became a queue. There are still only eight learners. The second person is on our side.
The shape is the same on every course. The content changes. You stay with the same eight people. If you miss a week, the recording is posted to you the same day, and you may repeat that lesson in the next cohort of the same course at no charge, if a seat is free.
Week 1. The tool on the device you already use. One small task completed together, then saved.
Week 2. Asking again, asking for shorter, checking a reply. This is the week we now keep slower on purpose.
Week 3. A task from your own life, inside the course theme. The group hears other people’s wording.
Week 4. A cold start, a recap of the printed notes, and how to replay the recording after we have gone.
We print the notes in large type and post them to a Singapore address. They are meant to be on the table from week two, with room in the margin for your own phrases. We do not rely on a PDF that pinches away when a message arrives. Each lesson is recorded. The recording is for the people who were in that group, and it stays available after the month ends. We do not put class recordings on this website. If a week is missed, watch the recording first, then book the free repeat if you still want the live hour.
We teach on one assistant, opened in the browser or the app already on your phone or tablet. We do not ask you to install a stack of new tools. If the default type is too small, we enlarge it on the settling call. If typing is tiring, the Voice, Dictation and Big Text course, or a one-to-one hour, spends the time on speaking instead of tapping. A laptop is welcome and not required. The joining link for the lesson is separate from the assistant; we send it by email and practise it on the settling call so the two things do not get mixed up on Tuesday.
The desk is at 238A Thomson Road, #05-02, Novena Square Tower A, Singapore 307683. It is above Novena MRT. We use it by appointment for enrolment papers and for people who want help with a device before a cohort starts. It is not a classroom. Lessons stay on video. Support hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–13:00, Singapore time. Classes also run on weekday evenings. If you need a Saturday morning one-to-one, say so when you write.
Write two lines about what you want to do, or name the course if you already know it. We reply with the next first-Tuesday date, the morning and evening times, and whether a subsidised seat is still free in that group.
