How to choose

Start from what you can already do on a Tuesday morning. If you have never opened an assistant, take First Steps. If you have opened one and keep getting a foggy paragraph back, take Ask Better Questions. If the thing that is keeping you awake is a voice on the phone that sounded like family, take Scam-Smart. The other four courses sit on top of those three. You can take two in a row; the pair is S$320. If you are still unsure, write two lines on the contact form and we will suggest one.

If you have never opened an assistant.

First Steps

If you use it but get vague answers.

Ask Better Questions

If you worry about being tricked.

Scam-Smart

The seven courses

Each course below is S$180 for four weeks. Groups stay at eight. The schedule line is the same for all of them because the calendar is shared: first Tuesday of the month, morning or evening.

First Steps with AI Chat

Beginner · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You have a smartphone. You have heard the words “ChatGPT” or “Gemini” and have either never opened them or opened them once, typed hello, and closed the app. You want someone on the call while you send the first real message, read the reply, and save it so it does not vanish. You do not want a lecture about how the models are built.

  • Week 1: the phone in your hand, the first message, reading the reply aloud.
  • Week 2: saving a chat, starting a new one, finding last week’s thread.
  • Week 3: asking for a shorter answer and noticing a guess.
  • Week 4: a small job from home, done from a cold start.

By the end you can open an assistant, ask a short question, save the thread, and decide whether the answer is usable.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Ask Better Questions

Next step · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You already get a reply, but it is long, vague, or slightly wrong in a way you cannot put your finger on. You want to ask again, ask for a shorter version, ask it to use plain words, and check a fact before you act on it. This course assumes you can open the app and send a message. If that is still the hard part, take First Steps first.

  • Week 1: the same topic asked vaguely and then asked well.
  • Week 2: length, tone, audience, and format as constraints you name out loud.
  • Week 3: follow-ups, “show your working”, catching a wrong detail.
  • Week 4: one personal task rewritten three ways and judged for use.

By the end you can turn a foggy request into a short brief and reject an answer that does not match it.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Photos and Family History

Practical · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You have envelopes of prints, an old phone full of unmarked pictures, or a sibling who has asked you to “sort Mum’s photos”. You want captions, dates and a simple folder plan. You may also want a careful restoration of a damaged print. We treat the original file as the record and any repaired version as a copy. This is not a course in graphic design.

  • Week 1: describing a photograph so a stranger, or an assistant, can tell who is in it.
  • Week 2: captions, dates, places, and a folder plan that still makes sense next year.
  • Week 3: what to ask a restoration tool for, and what to refuse.
  • Week 4: a short family note built from three pictures you bring.

By the end you can label a set of pictures, keep the originals, and write a short note that a relative can follow.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Scam-Smart in the Age of AI

Safety · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You have had a call that sounded like family, a video that looked like a grandchild, or an email that used the colours of a bank you actually use. You want a small set of checks you can run before you tap, transfer, or stay on the line. We look at cloned voices, staged video calls, and messages that pretend to be from a bank or a public agency. We do not claim you will never be targeted.

  • Week 1: how a cloned voice is made, and why a phone call is no longer proof.
  • Week 2: fake video calls and the “I am in trouble” script used on families.
  • Week 3: bank and government emails, and the check before you tap.
  • Week 4: a household rule card you take home and pin up if you wish.

By the end you can pause a suspicious call, run a second-channel check, and explain the rule to someone else in the house.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Letters, Speeches and Admin

Practical · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You need a polite email, a short speech for a wedding or a funeral, or a plain-words reading of a letter that arrived in dense type. You are willing to check every sentence the assistant drafts, because the facts have to be yours. Bring a real document in week four if you have one you are allowed to share. We do not write legal advice or fill government forms on your behalf.

  • Week 1: a polite email from a list of bullet points you already know.
  • Week 2: a short speech or toast, timed so it fits the slot.
  • Week 3: a dense letter explained in ordinary sentences.
  • Week 4: your own document, drafted and then checked line by line.

By the end you can turn notes into a draft and then strip anything the assistant invented.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Voice, Dictation and Big Text

Beginner · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. Typing is tiring, or the default type on the phone is too small, or both. You want to speak a message, hear a reply read aloud, and keep the type large enough to reread later. We set this up on the phone or tablet you already have. The assistant is the same one used in First Steps. The difference is the way you get words in and out.

  • Week 1: dictation on the phone, including punctuation by voice.
  • Week 2: larger type, stronger contrast, spoken replies.
  • Week 3: a short hands-free task, such as a list or a message.
  • Week 4: your own setup saved so it is still there the following week.

By the end you can dictate a request, hear the answer, and keep the screen readable without borrowing someone else’s fingers.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Helping the Family

Next step · 4 weeks · 60 min · S$180

Who this is for. You are the person others already ask. A grandchild wants you to “just try this”. A neighbour wants the same demonstration you were given. You need a calm way to explain what an assistant can do, what it should never be given (passwords, full identity numbers, other people’s private letters), and how to set a basic privacy control on a shared phone. First Steps or Ask Better Questions is a useful base, but it is not a hard rule.

  • Week 1: what to say when someone asks you to “just try” an assistant.
  • Week 2: privacy on a shared phone, and what a service may keep.
  • Week 3: what is safe to paste and what is never safe.
  • Week 4: a twenty-minute demonstration you can run for one other person.

By the end you can give a short demo, name three things that must not be pasted, and set a basic privacy control.

Starts on the first Tuesday of the month; evening and morning groups.

Single evening workshops

Two workshops run as single evenings. Each is 90 minutes, S$45, and capped at eight people. They do not replace a four-week course. They are for a first look, or for a person who wants one topic without a month of Tuesdays. Exact dates are confirmed by email when an evening opens.

One hour with an assistant. You open the tool, send a real question from home, and leave with a saved chat and a one-page printed sheet. The title says an hour; the session is 90 minutes so nobody is rushed off the call.

S$45 · 90 min

Spot the fake call. Cloned voices, staged video, and a short checklist you can keep by the phone. Built from the same material as week one of Scam-Smart, without the later household-rule work.

S$45 · 90 min

One-to-one sessions

A private hour is S$90. It can run by video, or at the Novena office by appointment. This is for people who want to go more slowly than a group, who need to work with a document they do not wish to mention in a class of eight, or who want help setting type size, dictation and a joining link on a new tablet before a cohort starts. It is not a substitute for the four-week course if what you want is the weekly rhythm and the other seven voices. Hours are booked in Singapore time, Monday to Friday, with a small number of Saturday morning slots.

Notes and a device on a desk
One-to-one hours can run by video or at Novena, by appointment.

What is included

  • The recording of each lesson, kept for you after the month ends.
  • A printed set of notes, large type, posted to a Singapore address.
  • Chat support during the lesson from the helper on the call.
  • A free repeat of one missed lesson in the next cohort of the same course.
  • A seat in a group of no more than eight.

Fees, subsidised seats, refunds

The four-week fee is S$180. Two courses booked together are S$320. Workshops are S$45. A private hour is S$90. In every cohort a few seats are held at S$60; write to us if the full fee is more than you can pay. We do not ask for supporting papers. If you cancel before the first lesson starts, we return the fee in full. After the first lesson, unused weeks are returned minus that first lesson. A missed week that you repeat in the next cohort is not charged again. Bank transfers and cards are both accepted; we confirm the method when we hold the seat.

Not sure which to take?

Write two lines about what you want to do and we will suggest one. Tell us whether you have opened an assistant before, whether a phone or a tablet is easier, and whether mornings or evenings fit. We reply in support hours.
